Some thoughts on being an imposter

Imposters,

Was listening to somebody today, and kind of was reminded about this whole imposter argument that I used to think about: When you’re doing something that you’re new to, or might even have some experience in, but can still be noticiable better, you should feel like an imposter. You are, in fact, an imposter by the definition itself! This whole narrative that imposter syndrome is something that you should avoid is really not helping anybody. It’s just interesting how it’s become the default almost, that we almost feel guilty sometimes if we feel like an imposter, where it should actually be the complete opposite!

That being said, being an imposter can be helpful if you look at it from the right perspective. You’re an imposter in the sense that you’re just trying to learn this new thing, or be better at it; but it also means that as an outsider, you might have unique perspectives that haven’t been diluted yet by the “correct” ways to do this activity yet. Don’t throw those perspective away just because these experts are telling you that something has always been done a certain way. Listern to them, do it their way for a while, but then try to be an artist for a while. Mix things, throw away things, borrow ideas, see what you can make of it. Who knows, maybe afte a while, you won’t feel like an imposter as much.
